The Kosovar Wondertaxi

The Kosovar WonderTaxi in Switzerland

A native of Kosovo has been turned into a local hero due to his humanism towards all the people that he comes into touch with. For his good will, Nderim Ismaili has made it to the front page of the Swiss based magazine “20 minutes.”

Nderim Ismaili, father of two daughters, has been working as a taxi driver in Lausanne ever since 2007. However, it is not the the years and miles passed that make his credentials of a wonder taxi driver, it is mostly up to his generosity that he is well known among the people.

Being modest, Mr. Ismaili tends to brush off the many compliments he receives, however the Swiss public know him for three very important cases. The first case starts at an early morning at around 4:30 where a professor is in need of immediate access to medication that would stop his 2 year old’s bleeding. Mr.Ismaili had not only driven the professor to long distances to find an open pharmacy, he had decided to take the professor to his house and borrow medication from his own after realizing that all the pharmacies are closed. To top off his generosity, Mr. Ismaili did not accept any payment, he only asked for the professor to do the same to other people in need.

Mr. Ismaili has many positive rumors surrounding him. Midst telling his story, the professor was interrupted by a bystander who claimed that the same taxi driver had helped her in multiple occasions. Furthermore, another great case describes Mr.Ismaili as a true movie like hero. During his routine drives downtown, he had spotted a woman shaking on the side of the road. Being a former Pharmacy student at the university of Prishinta, Mr. Ismaili had concluded that the woman was lacking sugar, thus he rushed and gave her pieces of candy which in turn kept her awake until the ambulance came. The paramedics had told the woman that if it was not for Mr. Ismaili, she could have passed away from the attack.

However, just when you would think that the WonderDriver was through with his goodwill. Here comes another case that makes you question your approach to life. Mr. Ismaili does not end his good deeds within boundary reach. Upon hearing of a homeless family in Presheva, Mr. Ismaili had decided to personally finance the construction of a house. Thus giving the chance for the family to experience a good nights sleep under a safe roof.

While being modest and shy, Mr. Ismaili explains how his work and deeds are not intended to bring him fame or money, his only wish is to show the Swiss people the real value of Albanian culture.

It has been reported by National Geographic that the tradition, while old and fascinating, is on the brink of extinction since there is only an old 65 year old lady that is knowledgeable enough to properly prepare brides to fit the custom.

The face of the bride is painted with multiple layers, each symbolizing different aspects of life. Three golden circles portraying the paths of life, with each intertwining each other, thus symbolizing the complexity of the circle of life. The inner red circles offer insight into the pagan ritual of fertility, with the red and blue dots on the white background, which in turn symbolize the will and wish for a healthy and happy family life.

Albin Sheqiri is back to the football field

Albin Sheqiri was born in 1993 in the southern part of Sweden. Sheqiri started playing football at a very young age, including his youth teams such as Karlskrona AIF, the well-known IFK Göteborgas well as the Qvidings FF. Additionally; Albin Sheqiri also represented Albania’s U17 team in an unofficial game, which even scored in his debut. To this day, Albin’s dream and hope is to represent his country Kosovo.

The quick and talented Albin, with roots from Kosovo, was also called in to play by a few other teams but had to turn down the offers due to a long time injury. During these past couple of months, Sheqiri has been struggling through injuries which put him on the sideline for some time. Currently, the attacking midfielder is not playing for any teams, but is training on his own hoping to make it back on the pitch. Optimistically, we hope that there is football team in Sweden that is ready to sign the young Albanian talent.

Albanians have a well-established representation on being determined and hard working in order to achieve success. The 20 year old Albin Sheqiri is a perfect example to portray that injuries should not stop anyone from achieving the end goals.

Don Geci: Lake View’s finest swimmer, aims all the way to the universe

Don “miracle baby” Geci, is the swimming star of Lake View High School but the way to the top hasn’t been easy. Today, the talented swimmer has huge passion for science and wants to study the Universe.

Ajtene Geci calls her son Don a “miracle baby.”

Don Geci nearly died several times as an infant from febrile seizures. That was when the now-16-year-old Lake View High School  junior’s family was escaping a war in Kosovo from 1998 to 1999 that would claim thousands of lives and create hundreds of thousands of refugees.

Ajtene carried Don, the youngest of her three children, for miles and miles through mountains, forests and rivers. The family — her husband Besnik, a daughter and two sons — survived four months in the wilderness before reaching neighboring Macedonia.

There, they joined other refugees on their way to Iceland, New York and finally San Diego. When they arrived in California, they had less than $50 to their name and only the clothes on their backs.

Most of the family now lives in Lakeview — where Don Geci is his high school’s second-ranked student and aspires to be an astrophysicist. He is also Lake View High’s top swimmer, powering through the pool with the same determination it took for his parents to start anew in the United States.

A Passion for Swimming and the Stars

After arriving in the U.S., Don never suffered a seizure again. He grew up in San Diego, learning to swim starting as a 4-year-old in neighborhood pools and the Pacific Ocean. He has loved torpedoing through the water since.

His affection for astronomy originated during a return trip to Kosovo when he was 10. Walking through a pitch-black forest at night, Don gazed at the sky and located the Milky Way, unblemished by any light pollution.

“I felt incredible emotions of awe and wonder when I saw it,” Don said.

[…]

Don’s teammates named him Lake View’s swimming MVP as a freshman and as a sophomore. He is a captain this year. “I look up to Don,” said senior swimmer Andriy Andrushchak, of Ukrainian Village. “He has very good leadership skills, he’s motivated, and he’s fun to be around.”

[…]

And while Don’s competitive swimming career likely will end after high school graduation, his dedication to science is just beginning. […] “He has no limit on books,” she said. “If you go in Don’s room, everything is in order, and it’s all about science. You can look around, but you can’t touch his books.”

‘My Goal Is to Study the Universe’

Don has a 4.85 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. He’s already taken advanced placement physics, chemistry, biology, world history and U.S. history. Next school year, he likely will add AP calculus, statistics, environmental sciences and psychology to that list.

[…]

…Don knows how much his family had to overcome for him to be able to live what he said is truly the American Dream. “Of course, I can’t understand what they went through, but I share grit with my parents,” Don said: “My parents’ goals were to establish a family in the United States. My goal is to study the universe.”
